The designer of the Great Seal of Missouri also built one of the most unique homes in the early Capital City. Before the Missouri River Regional Library was built next to the Carnegie Library, now county offices, Judge Robert Wells owned most of the block, where he built a river-packet-styled home facing High Street. Surrounded by a stone retaining wall topped with a rod iron fence, similar to the Governor's Mansion, it featured two stories of wraparound porches and a self-supporting spiral staircase.
