In the summer of 1867, the chairman of the Capital Club of Jefferson City and the secretary of the Empire Club of Sedalia arranged for a three-game series of baseball. Each team was to host a game, with the third to be held at neutral California, Missouri. The games became huge social events and business would shut down as if it were a holiday. Frank Miller, a local architect who designed the Cole County Courthouse and Central Bank building, in his remembrances of Jefferson City, wrote about baseball in the city in the late 1860s and early 1870s.
